HOLI- THE FESTIVAL OF COLORS, FUN & JOY

The Hindu festival Holi is celebrated across India each year with the arrival of spring. In 2020, Holi takes place on March 9&10.  On the eve of Holi, large bonfires are lit which is known as “Holika Dahan”.  People walk around the fire& worship God.  According to Hindu mythology, Holika “the demoness” was burned to death by Lord Vishnu for using her powers for evil. Holika’s brother Demon king Hiranyakashyap ordered her to burn his son, Prahlad because he used to worship Lord Vishnu. She sat in the burning fire with Prahlad in her lap but due to his true devotion, Lord Vishnu protected him & Holika was burned to death. From that period, The festival of Holi is celebrated which represent the victory of GOOD Over EVIL.

The next day, People celebrate Holi by throwing colours & water on each other. As Lord Krishna, who liked to play pranks on the village girls by throwing Gulal (coloured powder)on them. That’s why Holi is also known as the festival of colours.
